The one-sentence version
SEO helps a person find your website in a list of results. AEO helps an AI system find your content and use it to answer a question directly, often without the person ever clicking through to your site at all.
Neither one has replaced the other. They solve different problems, and increasingly, you need both.

Why you can't just pick one
SEO fundamentals — a fast site, clear structure, real authority in your space — are still what gets your content found and trusted in the first place. AI answer engines aren't operating in a vacuum; many still lean on traditional search infrastructure to decide what's crawlable and credible.
But here's the part that catches businesses off guard: strong SEO alone doesn't guarantee you'll show up in an AI-generated answer. Ahrefs' research found that when an AI Overview appears above the organic results, it reduces the click-through rate of the #1 organic position by 58% — meaning even a page that's "winning" at SEO can still lose the traffic if it isn't also structured to be the thing the AI actually quotes.
What "AEO on top of SEO" actually looks like
In practice, this isn't two separate content strategies — it's one strategy with an extra layer of intent:
- Keep the SEO basics solid. Site speed, mobile usability, clear internal linking, genuine topical authority. This doesn't go away.
- Add direct-answer structure. For any question your customers actually ask, have a section that states the answer plainly in the first sentence or two, before expanding with detail.
- Write for extraction, not just ranking. Ask yourself: if an AI system pulled just this one paragraph out of context, would it still make sense and answer the question correctly?
FAQ
Is AEO a completely different skill set from SEO?No — AEO builds directly on SEO fundamentals. The overlap is large; the difference is mostly in how content is structured at the paragraph and heading level, not in the underlying strategy.
Will focusing on AEO hurt my traditional SEO rankings? No. Writing clear, direct, well-structured answers tends to help both — search engines and AI systems both reward content that's easy to understand and directly relevant to the question being asked.
Which one should a small business prioritize first? If your SEO fundamentals are already weak (slow site, thin content, poor structure), fix those first — AEO built on a weak foundation won't perform well. If your SEO is solid but your content doesn't answer questions directly, AEO restructuring is likely the higher-leverage next step.
